To me, commuter bikes are a utility. I need to be able to lock it outside a bar and not worry if I come back a day later. I’ve accepted that traffic accidents are not an “if” but “when” and I’d rather sacrifice my bike than my body. And riding every single day, no matter how good of a mechanic you are, is rough on components.
But… I do love cool bikes. So when we met the guys from Container Collective that make bamboo bikes, I decided to jump into one of their workshops. Building your own frame from a couple tubes of bamboo, some carbon fiber strands, and – let’s be honest – a metric ton of epoxy is a really cool experience.....read more.

"The Container Collective is located in Lakewood, Colorado, on the outskirts of Denver. Russ Hopkins, whom I met and got to play bike polo with at NAHBS, is head of the bicycle end of things, and he hosts bamboo bike building workshops several times a year. Each weekend-long workshop includes instruction and materials to build either a frame-only or a complete cruiser, singlespeed, 5-speed, or 9-speed bike...." read more about halfway through the article published here!

Wanderlust Weekly: Congrats on the growth of Container Collective! What inspired it's creation? Container Collective: My husband and I were teaching at a boarding school in Utah in 2013. As we sat on the couch in the straw bale house that we built (with our very own hands) we talked about how coworkers would show up after work to practice yoga with me or to have Russ tune-up their bicycle. And so often, our house was the gathering place for casual hanging out or theme parties. We began to dream about... read more
Spotlight on Lakewood |
We were interviewed by Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul for the local Chanel 8 TV station. Check it out in the video below!
I’m from Texas, and my husband Russ is from Wisconsin. We met while he was in art school and I was dancing professionally in Chicago. We fell in love with Colorado before moving to Utah for eight years to teach at an international school.
While in Utah we built, with our own hands, a straw bale home and converted our car to run on waste vegetable oil before moving to Beijing, China, to teach dance and art.
We finally made it back to the city we’ve always wanted to live in and are proud to share our passions with the Lakewood community and beyond through The Container Collective....read more...

Yoga studio meets bike shop: it’s a match made for Denver.
Husband-and-wife duo Russ and Brittany Hopkins will invest $350,000 to buy the building that houses Container Collective, their shared Colfax Avenue yoga studio/bike workshop in Lakewood.
It opened in 2014 with a yoga studio at 1492 Ammons St. Then Russ began teaching bamboo bike-building workshops in September. The next step, they said, is to purchase the building and open a shop specializing in service and repairs for all bike types — not just bamboo ones.

When entrepreneur Russell Hopkins isn’t tearing up local skate parks on his BMX bike or converting old Volkswagens to run on oil, you can find him at his new bike shop in Lakewood, the Container Collective, crafting bamboo bicycle frames from scratch. A Wisconsin native whose last job was teaching photography in Beijing, Hopkins shares a one-story building across from the Lakewood Grill with his wife, Brittany, who runs a yoga studio next door.

Container Collective Owners Brittany & Russ Hopkins Container Collective is in the business of bikes, yoga, and community. Owners Brittany and Russ Hopkins each bring their personal talent to a specific corner of the business, Brittany to the yoga side and Russ to the art and architecture of bikes – bamboo bikes specifically and even more specifically, building them from scratch in his 2-day workshops. The bamboo bikes definitely qualify as functional art. They are sleek and minimalist, but also have an industrial raw look to them, the combination of bamboo, metal gears, and the black carbon fiber thread that wraps the joints. Bamboo Bike In speaking with Russ I can see his passion, not just for bikes, but even more for the process of teaching someone to build something from scratch. He tells me read more....
Military men and women see and experience things that change them. Sometimes in ways that everyone can see, sometimes in ways that aren’t visible.
